What is blepharoplasty?

Translating the word before trusting the pitch

Blepharoplasty means eyelid surgery. The name tells you the body part, not what will be done to it, because the surgeon's choices decide that.

What the label "blepharoplasty" covers

A name is a label, so look at what the label covers. A study asking which tissue should be removed in upper blepharoplasty is useful for exactly this reason. Its title treats the choice of tissue as an open question, which tells you the term alone does not settle it.

A second thing to check is what happens to the skin. A paper titled Minimally Invasive Eyelid Lift: A Skin Preservation Upper Blepharoplasty describes folding surplus skin inward instead of cutting it away. Read it to see that an upper blepharoplasty need not remove skin at all, then ask whether yours would.

If a page says only that the procedure "refreshes" the eyes, quote that sentence back and ask what changes, where, and by how much.

Eyelid questions about tissue and skin

Ask at the consultation:

  1. Which part of my eyelid will you change, and what will you remove or move?
  2. Will you remove skin, fold it in or leave it, and why?
  3. What do your before and after photos show, and how long after surgery were they taken?

Whether anything should be done

Knowing the term is not medical advice. A surgeon who examines you decides what, if anything, should be done.
